But no one was visiting his website as there was no content on it.

He wanted me to write articles for his website.

So, my aim as a content writer was to write articles on topics that would bring potential customers to his business

Start a Blog (#2 Becoming a Content Writer in India)

You want to become a content writer, then why am I asking you to start a blog?

Because, when you are beginning your content writing career, you need to first learn the basics of content writing and apply those learnings to see their result and eventually get better with experiences.

Otherwise, why will anyone even hire you to write content for them.

Which includes

How to:

  • Research topics?
  • Grab user attention?
  • Write Interesting Titles?
  • Persuade people to buy?
  • Rank articles on Google?

And what better place to learn all this than starting a blog.

[You can read my step by step guide on – Starting a blog in India from scratch under 30 Min]

See, one of the crucial things you need to learn hand to hand with content writing is to also be able to rank those articles on Google

Otherwise the articles you write for any business or yourself will be of no use.

If you are asking – Why do I need to rank articles?

Then I will make you find the answer by yourself.

When you search for a thing on Google, how often do you go to the 2nd page of Google.

Rarely! Right?

You always end up clicking the articles on the 1st page only.

And for a fact 90% of the people do the same

So, it is very important for you to be able to rank your articles on the first page of Google, only then it will bring any visitors.

Starting a blog will help you practice and see the results in real time rather than just reading theories which will not help you get any better.

Apart from content writing, with blogging you will learn how to find keywords, do SEO (rank articles) and promote any article over the Internet.

All these things make you an all rounder content writer.

Don’t get overwhelmed by all these words, once you start to practice, all these things will start to make sense to you.

Write on Social Platforms

One of the biggest advantages of starting a journey of becoming a content writer in this era is that:

You have so many social platforms where you can share your content for free and get genuine feedback.

You have sites like Quora, Medium, LinkedIn, Reddit etc, where you can write on your desired topics and see how it performs.

Whether people are resonating with it or not.

If you get negative feedback, don’t get disheartened by them, rather take them constructively and see if you really need to improve on that particular area.

If people start to like your content it will also help you build a following over these platforms and you can also get hired.

When this happens you know you are going in the right direction.

It’s time to get into the action.

Start Getting Works

This is the part which might interest you the most. Right…!!!

How to get clients for content writing?

And why not, when you are putting in your time and effort into something it should yield you good returns.

So, how will you get clients for Content Writing?

There are quite a few ways for getting clients.

Create a Profile on Fiverr & Upwork

Fiverr and Upwork are one of the most popular freelancing gig communities.

From where you can get clients all over the world and you don’t even have to run after clients.

For this:

You will need to create your profile on both these platforms, share your best work and if you start a blog give a link to that as well.

See, this is where starting a blog comes very handy, because when you are super new to these platforms.

People usually don’t buy gigs from new sellers because they are not sure about their work.

But by giving a link to your blog, you can showcase your writing skills to them.

Also, when you are just starting on these platforms keep your pricing very competitive once you start to get orders and good reviews gradually increase your prices.

Publish Content on LinkedIn

Sharing your best content consistently over LinkedIn can land you many projects.

Because LinkedIn is not like other social media platforms where people come to kill time.

Rather it is used by both employees and employers.

So, if you churn out great content consistently for a good period of time you will eventually get noticed by people.

There are many people on LinkedIn who get a lot of freelancing gigs & job offers because of the work they put on this platform.

Trust me, if you can put good content on LinkedIn for 4-6 months, you will start to see its magic.

Cold Pitching

Cold pitching is all about reaching out to businesses/people to work for them.

This method is a bit tough from the rest of the 2 because you will need to be creative to reach out and tell people how you can help them.

But this method will get you better gigs and help you make more money than any other method.

You will need to find business from your Niche (Topic in which you write) and find their email or any other contact information and show them how you can help them get more customers or brand awareness through content.

Your success rate at the beginning will be very less, but with time you will also learn the art of convincing people.

One thing you can do at the start is:

You can offer your work free to the first 3 businesses and bring positive results for them and then use that as your portfolio when you reach out the next time.

This way you will be able to show proof of how your content helped these 3 businesses get more customers.

And nothing sells better than actual results in the market.

Just like any other art, your writing skills will also improve with more practice.

The more you practice, the better your skills will get.

I have been in this field for the last 5-6 years and still I try to write around 1000 words every single day.

First it used to take me a lot of time but now writing 1000 words has become a piece of cake for me.

If you also want to become a content writer then you should also start to write and let the world know your skills.

Drop your feedback in the comment section because I always feedbacks help me know if I’m going in the right direction.
